The Umizumiz was the unaired pitch pilot of Team Umizoomi, and the original name for the series. It is considered partially found media, as a few short clips of the pilot exist online. However, the pilot is has not been found in its entirety.

Series Description[]

Premiering on Noggin, The Umizumiz is an animated interactive series for preschoolers about a miniature urban repair squad that solves everyday problems with the help of the home audience.

The Umizumiz, which will feature foundational skills like counting, patterns and measuring, was created by Soo Kim and Michael Smith and is co-created and executive-produced by Jennifer Twomey." [1]

Series History[]

The Umizumiz was first filed as a trademark on April 20th, 2006. [2] This was 3 months before the final episode of Blue's Clues, which aired on August 6th, 2006. [3] This is notable as the creators of the show worked on Blue's Clues before moving to The Umizumiz/Team Umizoomi.

Development started for a pilot episode that was produced for the show in late-March 2007. It was picked up to become a full series after the pilot was produced. The pilot was never aired, but the series was set to premiere on the Noggin channel in 2008. [1] It was delayed and reworked into the series we know it as today.

It was announced on September 17th, 2008, that the series was now renamed to Team Umizoomi, it had started production, and was set to premiere in 2009. [4] It was delayed again, with the series premiere airing on January 25th, 2010.

Pilot[]

Little is known about the pilot itself, however, a few clips do exist online.

Presumably, the pilot used the Umizumiz Theme as the intro, however the only version publicly available is a demo version of it.

Characters[]

  • Milli: She was very similar to the current Milli, besides the more simplified design. She still uses Milli Measure, extending her ponytails to measure the dinosaur skeleton's tail. She still has her two ponytails, but has a shirt instead of a dress, and has basic shoes rather than her current platform shoes, both aspects seem to be on ZigZag instead.
  • Geo: His helmet has an indent in the shape of a hyphen/minus sign. His ability is unknown, as Alphonse has his shape belt. However, in a piece of concept art he is counting which may be his ability instead. He is also holding a blue crayon in the same concept art with a gray claw on his side, likely being the place where he holds the crayon.
  • Bot: His appearance remains unchanged except for the mouth, which is green. It is unknown if he still used his Belly Screen, the Umi Alarm, or Extendo-Arms in the pilot.
  • ZigZag: She is a purple girl who has a zigzag pattern on her dress. Her helmet has bear ears. Her design was similar to Milli's current design. It is likely that she had Pattern Power instead of Milli due to the pattern on her dress.
  • Alphonse: He is an orange boy who had the Shape Belt and wears roller skates on his shoes. His helmet has a triangle on it, and looks similar to a construction helmet. His head is more square than the others. His design was similar to Geo's current design, as he notably has the Shape Belt. Because of this, it might be the case that he used to have Geo's Super Shapes power.
  • UmiCar: He was originally called The Zipmobile (or Zip Car in the demo theme song). He was white with orange accents instead of the current orange. He had no face, similar to UmiCar from early Season 1 episodes. It is unknown if he was sentient in the pilot.

Plot[]

  • (Note: This is all speculation and has not been confirmed.)

Of the clips and images that have been found, it can be assumed that the pilot's plot involved The Umizumiz going into a museum. There is an aquatic themed exhibit with a whale in the center and a dinosaur exhibit with a large dinosaur skeleton in the center. Milli seems to have talked to the dinosaur, then measured its tail. Afterwards, they find a beetle on the dinosaur's tail. Beetle asks if the team was looking for them, and Geo says that today is "the Big Bug Show", and the kids are coming to see Beetle and the other bugs.

Based off this information, it is likely that the episode is about the Big Bug Show, and finding bugs scattered across the museum, which is similar to the plot of The Dinosaur Museum Mishap, except instead of dinosaurs, it has the bugs getting lost, and takes place only in the museum rather than Umi City.

Differences[]

General Differences[]

  • The art style very different, being more simple and having the characters looking more like toys or robots than humans.
  • According to the demo theme song, Umi City was originally called "Metro City".
  • Also according to the demo theme song, its said that The Umizumiz would be a secret group and unknown to Metro City, unlike the series which has the characters known by everyone in Umi City.

Character Differences[]

  • Milli and Geo's skin color was originally based on their outfit color rather than having human colored skin.

Geo[]

  • Geo's helmet is missing the two antennae, instead having a cube on the right side and a minus sign on his helmet.
  • Geo's shape belt and roller blades are instead on Alphonse.

Milli[]

  • Milli is primarily red with pink accents, while her current design is more pink.
    • She is also wearing a shirt instead of a dress.
  • Milli's platform shoes are instead on ZigZag.
  • Originally, Milli was the shortest member of the group, but now is in the middle in terms of height, still being shorter than Bot but being slightly taller than Geo.

Bot[]

  • Bot has more claw-like hands which are green instead of orange.
  • His mouth area is dark green instead of blue.
    • His mouth also uses an audio wave instead of a regular mouth.
  • The orange part of his antenna is now blue.

Trivia[]

  • The pilot was once available in full in late 2012, but was taken down and was not properly archived.
